Veteran British television presenter Dermot Murnaghan has died at the age of 68, a year after revealing he had been diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer.His family announced that he passed away peacefully at his home in North London, surrounded by loved ones.
Murnaghan was one of Britain’s most respected broadcast journalists, enjoying a career that spanned nearly five decades. During that time, he became a familiar face on major news programmes, including BBC Breakfast, the BBC News at Six and Ten, ITV Evening News, and Sky News.
After publicly sharing his cancer diagnosis last year, Murnaghan remained positive about his treatment and used his platform to encourage men, especially those over 50 or at higher risk, to undergo regular prostate cancer screening.
He repeatedly stressed that early detection can save lives, noting that the disease may develop without obvious symptoms.His family expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support and kind messages he received throughout his illness, as well as the encouragement for his efforts to raise awareness about prostate cancer.
Before becoming a household name on television, Murnaghan began his journalism career in local newspapers. He later worked with Channel 4 News before joining ITV, where he presented several flagship news programmes.
In 2002, he moved to the BBC, becoming one of the network’s leading news presenters and later hosting the popular quiz show Eggheads for over a decade.He also spent 16 years at Sky News and presented several documentary series, including programmes focusing on major crime stories. In recent years, he launched the podcast Legends of News, where he interviewed veteran journalists about the biggest stories of their careers.Following news of his death, tributes poured in from colleagues, politicians, and viewers who praised his professionalism, calm presence, and remarkable contribution to journalism.
