Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah has reflected on Ghana’s recent political trajectory, describing the period leading up to the 2024 general elections as one of deep national strain that tested the country’s democratic resilience.

Speaking on JoyNews’ 2025 in Review, Braimah said the country had reached a worrying stage where governance challenges were no longer abstract but visibly destabilising.

“I think in terms of governance, we had, to be frank with you, gotten to a point where the country was on the brink,” he stated, pointing to the cumulative effect of economic pressure and public anxiety.

He highlighted the severity of the economic downturn, particularly the sharp depreciation of the cedi, as a moment that underscored how fragile the situation had become. According to him, the crisis was so pronounced that it forced an unusual public intervention from the highest office.

“At some point when the cedi was so bad, the president himself had to make a public appeal to our military not to think about intervening,” Braimah recalled.

Against that backdrop, he argued that the conduct and outcome of the 2024 elections played a crucial role in easing national tension and restoring a measure of calm.

While stopping short of framing the polls as a cure-all, Braimah said they helped reset the country’s political balance. “In the interest of stability and the continuity of our Fourth Republic, what happened by way of the 2024 elections perhaps got us to be stable as a country,” he noted.

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi, has been fighting to protect his job at the entity after it emerged that GoldBod had incurred some losses in 2025.

The Chief Executive has, since news broke, defended his work, providing explanations on the losses.

His first clarification of the story indicated that GoldBod was not aware of any losses made by the Bank of Ghana.

“The GoldBod is not aware of any loss of $214 million incurred by the BoG under the Gold for Reserve Program on account of “GoldBod offtaker fees”. The financials of the Gold for Reserve and Gold for Forex programs of the Bank of Ghana for the year 2025 are yet to be audited,” he said in a Facebook post.

He had earlier stated that “Yesterday, the Ghana Gold Board surpassed its 2025 small-scale gold export target of 100 tons, generating over $10 billion dollars in foreign exchange for the country. Unprecedented”.

But the IMF in its report indicated that the operations of Ghana Goldbod incurred losses of approximately US$214 million (GHS2.6Billion) from the operations between January and September this year on the back of Bank of Ghana, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) staff report on the fifth review of Ghana’s IMF-supported programme.

In a subsequent post on the matter, he described the criticisms and the report backing it as jandam.

“Today in 2025, the NPP is complaining about the fact that the BoG working in conjunction with the GoldBod, has reduced their recurring G4R and G4O losses to GHS3.3 billion (according to the NPP) and yet, inflation has declined for 11 consecutive months from 23.8% to 6.3%, while the Ghana cedi has cumulatively appreciated by over 35% against the U.S. dollar (the first time the cedi is appreciating since the year 2007).”

During investigations, it was uncovered that the so-called Islamic cleric is the main supplier. As we speak, he is on remand. We must start to name and shame some of them”, he revealed.

Founder and Leader of Glorious Word Power Ministries, Reverend Isaac Owusu Bempah, has attributed Ghana’s recent economic stability to divine intervention, describing it as clear evidence of God’s blessings on the nation.

Delivering a sermon during the church’s 2025 Christmas celebration, the outspoken preacher said developments in the economy, particularly the performance of the cedi, should be acknowledged as signs of grace rather than coincidence.

A former armed robber who says he has turned his back on crime has sparked intense public debate after making explosive claims about the alleged spiritual practices of some politicians and pastors in Ghana.

In a video circulating on X (formerly Twitter), the man alleged that certain influential figures engage in extreme ritualistic acts in pursuit of power, wealth, and fame. His remarks, delivered bluntly, have drawn widespread reactions online.

“Some of the politicians come and rent dead bodies and take them home for rituals. Others also buy sperms from prostitutes for rituals. Most of them sleep with dead bodies all because of power and fame,” he claimed in the video.

He went further to name Kumasi as a location where he says he has direct knowledge of such practices, though he did not mention specific individuals.

“In Kumasi I know four pastors, one sleeps with dead bodies, one buys sperms from prostitute and others bath with water from dead bodies,” he alleged.

Beyond ritual accusations, the former robber also spoke about what he described as the strange lifestyles of some wealthy individuals, claiming that despite their riches, they live extremely restrictive personal lives.

“We have some people; they have plenty monies but they can’t spend more than 30 cedis a day. They can use the money to help others but not their own family members,” he said.

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has gunned down three suspected armed robbers to prevent a planned highway robbery along the Anwiankwanta–Obuasi Highway.

In a statement posted on their social media handles, the police said the suspects—identified as Seidu Issah, Musah Yakubu, and Yahaya Munkaila, also known as Tijani—were intercepted on 24th December 2025 while gathering in a bush between Anwiankwanta and the Jacobu junction to carry out the operation.

“The officers encountered the gang, came under gunfire, and returned fire, neutralising three suspects while two others managed to escape,” the police said.

Seven weapons were recovered from the scene, including two pump-action guns loaded with ammunition, an unbranded pistol, twenty-five live cartridges, and six spent cartridges.

The suspects were rushed to Bekwai Municipal Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival. Their bodies were preserved at the hospital morgue for autopsy.

The police confirmed that the suspects are believed to have been involved in several high-profile crimes, including the Jacobu airport robbery on 3rd November 2025 that led to the death of a security guard, multiple highway robberies along the Manso stretch, the Antoakrom robbery, the Abofour forest robbery near Offinso, and the attack on a gold buyer at Anwiankwanta on 8th December 2025.

In a follow-up operation on 26th December 2025 at a palm plantation near Manso Nkwanta, where the suspects were known to hide rifles, officers recovered one AK47 assault rifle, one MG3 rifle, a pump-action gun, and a single-barrel gun, along with ammunition and personal items.

“We are making strenuous efforts to trace the sources of these weapons and to arrest accomplices who are still at large,” the police added.

British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua was involved in a fatal road accident in Nigeria that left two people dead and sent the fighter to hospital with minor injuries.

The crash occurred along the Lagos–Ibadan expressway near the Sagamu Interchange as Joshua, 36, was travelling from Lagos toward his family home.

Road safety officials confirmed that five adult males were involved in the incident.

Two people died at the scene, two others escaped unhurt, while Joshua sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for medical attention.

Images from the scene showed the boxer being assisted from the damaged vehicle following the collision with a stationary truck.

The Federal Road Safety Corps said preliminary investigations indicated excessive speed and improper overtaking.

“The Lexus Jeep, suspected to be travelling beyond the prescribed speed limit, lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into a stationary truck parked by the roadside,” the agency said in a statement posted on X.

Matchroom chairman and Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, confirmed he was aware of the incident and said the boxer was taken to hospital and was “OK.”

A family member later told the BBC the crash had left relatives “shocked,” adding that they had been expecting Joshua to visit for the New Year.

“We are hoping for his speedy recovery, and for the people who passed away, I pray they rest in peace,” the relative said.

Joshua was reportedly travelling in a two-car convoy with a security vehicle at the time of the accident.
