Cyril Ramaphosa Vows to Stay in Office and Fight Impeachment Bid

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has made it clear he has no plans to resign, despite fresh moves that could lead to his impeachment.

Speaking on Monday, Ramaphosa firmly stated, “I remain here and am not resigning,” putting an end to days of speculation about his future.

The situation stems from the long-running Phala Phala scandal. It involves the theft of a large sum of foreign cash hidden in furniture at his private game farm. An independent panel previously found there was enough evidence to suggest Ramaphosa may have committed serious misconduct in how he handled the matter.

Ramaphosa has strongly denied any wrongdoing, insisting the money came from the legitimate sale of buffalo from his farming business.Last week, South Africa’s Constitutional Court ruled that parliament had acted unconstitutionally when it previously blocked an impeachment inquiry.

This opened the door for the process to move forward. In response, the president says he will now challenge the report in court, arguing it relied on hearsay evidence.

He hopes to have it reviewed and set aside.Political observers believe Ramaphosa is likely to survive any parliamentary vote to remove him, but he appears determined to avoid a full impeachment hearing that could seriously damage his reputation and legacy.

The matter continues to stir political tensions in South Africa.
