The ongoing dispute between singer Qing Madi and her former label, JTON Music, has taken a new turn as both parties continue to offer conflicting interpretations of a recent court ruling.
The controversy gained renewed attention after Qing Madi addressed fans during a TikTok live session, where she spoke about the removal of some of her music from Spotify.
The singer accused her former label and its founder, Joy Tongo, of actions she believes have negatively affected her career, including allegations of forgery and interference with her music releases.In response, JTON Music released a statement describing the matter as a contractual and commercial dispute.
The label maintained that a Lagos court granted an interlocutory injunction restricting Qing Madi from releasing, performing, or commercially exploiting music connected to agreements signed with the company until the case is fully determined.
According to JTON, existing agreements involving music distribution and recording partnerships remain valid, and the court order supports its position pending the final outcome of the case.
However, Qing Madi’s current representatives, KFMD, strongly disagreed with that interpretation. In a detailed statement, the management company argued that the court recognised the singer’s right to choose her own management and continue her career independently.
KFMD further stated that the contracts being challenged were signed when Qing Madi was just 16 years old. The company argued that the court considered those agreements voidable under relevant child protection laws and maintained that the injunction only applies to specific recordings linked to the disputed contracts rather than her entire career.
The management company also accused JTON of issuing copyright complaints to streaming platforms and sending notices to event organisers in an effort to restrict the singer’s performances and music distribution.
According to KFMD, those actions misrepresent the court’s decision.With both parties publicly claiming the ruling supports their position, confusion continues to surround the case.
