Chicago rapper Twista has pleaded guilty to five counts of willfully failing to pay his income taxes, putting him at risk of a prison sentence of up to five years.

The artist, whose real name is Carl Mitchell, admitted to failing to pay income taxes between 2019 and 2023. Authorities say he owes more than $440,000 in unpaid taxes.

He is expected to be sentenced on October 22.Twista rose to fame with his 2004 album Kamikaze and is widely known for collaborating with artists such as Ye and Jamie Foxx on the hit song “Slow Jamz.” His earnings came from live performances, album sales, streaming revenue and music royalties.

According to prosecutors, Mitchell continued to ignore repeated warnings about his tax obligations. Instead of settling the debt, he reportedly arranged to receive advances on future royalty payments through a third-party company, making it harder for authorities to collect the money.

Officials also claim Mitchell has outstanding tax debts dating back to 2011. During that time, he allegedly continued making expensive purchases, including at least four luxury vehicles.Mitchell’s representatives have not publicly commented on the case. If convicted at sentencing, the rapper could receive a prison term along with other penalties.
