Gospel singer Cecilia Marfo has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to pardon and release Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, who is currently serving a prison sentence over illegal mining-related offences.
According to Marfo, Wontumi’s imprisonment has not brought an end to illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey. She argued that the practice continues in many parts of the country, showing that the problem goes beyond one individual.
Speaking on the issue, Marfo said she had recently witnessed people openly engaging in illegal mining near an event she attended, insisting that jailing one person alone cannot solve the country’s long-standing challenge.She called on the government to adopt a broader approach in tackling galamsey, stressing that every administration should continue efforts made by previous governments to address the issue.
Marfo also made it clear that her appeal was not politically motivated. She said her comments were inspired by her Christian faith and belief in forgiveness.”I’m not defending or attacking anyone,” she said. “I’m speaking from a place of Christianity. Just as Christ forgives us, we should also learn to forgive others.”The gospel singer ended her appeal by urging President Mahama to show compassion and consider granting Chairman Wontumi a pardon.
