American R&B star Chris Brown has pleaded guilty to a public order offence over a 2023 nightclub brawl in London, bringing an end to the possibility of a full trial on more serious charges.
The 37-year-old singer appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Friday, July 24, 2026, and admitted to one count of affray. In exchange, prosecutors said they would drop additional charges of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon..
Dressed in a beige suit with a dark brown tie, gold-rimmed sunglasses and a St. Louis Cardinals baseball cap, Brown stood in the dock and replied “Guilty” when the charge of affray was read to him.
Under UK law, affray covers the use or threat of unlawful violence that would cause a person of reasonable firmness to fear for their personal safety. It carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison, though penalties can also include fines and community service.
The court heard the charge relates to an incident at Tape, an exclusive private members’ club in Hanover Square, London, on February 19, 2023, while Brown was touring the UK.
Co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu, 40, also a US national, appeared alongside Brown and pleaded guilty to the same affray charge. Both men will be sentenced together in October
Prosecutors had initially charged Brown with more serious offences, including attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon, specifically a bottle.
In a previous hearing, prosecutor Claire Campbell described it as “a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim’s head twice,” adding that the victim was then allegedly pursued, punched and kicked.
Brown had denied those charges at earlier hearings. With his guilty plea to affray, the Crown said the more serious counts would be formally dropped at a later date.
Brown was arrested in May 2025 at a five-star hotel in Manchester, hours after arriving in the UK by private jet. He spent nearly a week in custody before being released on bail.
Despite the arrest, Judge Tony Baumgartner allowed Brown to continue with a scheduled European tour that had begun in June in Amsterdam. He was permitted to travel under strict bail conditions.
The new case adds to a long public record of legal issues for Brown, who rose to fame in the mid-2000s with hits like “Kiss Kiss” and “Run It!” after starting out singing in a church choir in Virginia.
He is best known for his 2009 felony conviction for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna before the Grammy Awards, an incident that forced her to miss the ceremony.
In 2012, Brown was involved in an altercation at a New York nightclub with members of Drake’s entourage. French basketball player Tony Parker was injured in that incident after being struck by a thrown glass bottle.
