Ghanaian actor and television host Kwaku Manu has publicly appealed to President John Dramani Mahama not to renew Gold Fields’ mining licence when it expires in 2027.
Speaking in a video shared online, the actor argued that Ghana must begin taking stronger control of key sectors of the economy, especially strategic industries like mining.
His comments come amid growing national discussions about the future of large-scale mining operations in Ghana, as authorities signal that mining licence renewals may no longer happen automatically.
Companies are expected to show stronger commitments to local employment, environmental responsibility, and community development.Gold Fields’ current mining lease is expected to expire in January 2027, sparking debate about whether the South African mining giant should continue operating in the country.
Before addressing the mining issue, Kwaku Manu praised Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa for helping bring Ghanaians back home from South Africa amid reports of xenophobic attacks.
According to him, the minister has shown dedication and competence in handling difficult international matters involving Ghanaian citizens abroad.“Let’s put politics aside.
The Foreign Affairs Minister is doing a great job,” he said, while also referencing the reported release of Ghanaian soldiers detained abroad.
Kwaku Manu then turned his attention to the mining sector, urging President Mahama to reconsider any plans to extend Gold Fields’ operations.“I heard Gold Fields is seeking a 20-year renewal of their lease. Mr President, please do not renew it for them,” he said.
The actor stressed that Ghana should not create hostility toward foreign nationals or investors, but insisted that the country must prioritise local ownership and economic control.
He also suggested that capable Ghanaian businessmen and mining experts could successfully manage such operations if given the opportunity.“We have Ibrahim Mahama and other Ghanaians with mining expertise who can manage these operations,” he added.
His comments have since sparked conversations online, with many Ghanaians debating the future of foreign-owned mining companies and the importance of local participation in the country’s natural resources sector.
