Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has opened up about the leak of her private video in 2021, describing it as traumatic and revealing for the first time that she believes it was exposed as part of a bet made by her then-boyfriend.

Speaking on The Breakfast Club, the American radio show, Savage said the incident left deep emotional scars and that she now views herself as a victim, not someone who staged the moment for attention.

The video first surfaced online in 2021 and immediately went viral. At the time, reports claimed Savage had been targeted by a blackmailer after refusing to pay to keep it private.

In her new interview, Savage gave a different account. She said her boyfriend at the time initially told her the video had been sent by accident while he was trying to save it. She later found out the truth was far worse.

“Even that itself was traumatic because he was my boyfriend, we were in a relationship, and I’m hearing later that it was a bet,” she said. “So, did you really like me or this was just planned from the beginning?”

For Savage, the betrayal cut deeper because of the trust involved. The person she was intimate with, she said, may have been treating their relationship as a wager among friends.

The singer said the experience has permanently changed how she approaches dating and privacy. She no longer meets romantic partners in hotel rooms.
“I’m not going to anyone’s hotel cause you can have cameras hidden; yeah, you’re coming to my safe space,” she explained.

She added that keeping her personal life within spaces she controls is also about protecting her son from being exposed to controversy surrounding herin the immediate aftermath of the leak, Savage tried to manage the fallout with humour. She even referenced the incident in her music, including a line in her song Loaded. At the time, she said, appearing unbothered felt like the only way to survive public scrutiny

Since come to terms with the fact that I did not fully process the experience when it happened,” she said. “I was hurt. I’m a victim of the situation.”

That shift in perspective — from deflecting with jokes to naming the hurt — marks a change in how she talks about the episode five years later

“They thought I did it for PR,” she said. “A lot of people thought, ‘Ah, she’s not relevant anymore and she’s doing this.’ And I’m like, Guys, trust me, if I wanted to do that, I would have had better lighting.”

The comment drew laughs, but her point was serious. She said the suggestion that she orchestrated the leak added another layer of pain on top of the betrayal itself.

She also revealed that she considered legal action but ultimately dropped it. Revisiting the details repeatedly, she said, became too emotionally draining to continue.

The interview was wide-ranging. Savage also discussed her album This One Is Personal, the issue of ageism in the music industry, and how she has continued to build her career despite public controversy.

Since the 2021 leak, Savage has remained one of Africa’s most visible music exports. She has toured internationally, released new music, and spoken openly about the pressures of fame as a woman in Afrobeats.

But she says the tape incident forced her to re-evaluate trust, boundaries, and how much of her private life she is willing to share.

What stands out now, she says, is not the viral moment but the betrayal behind it. To be hurt by a partner, and then to be doubted by the public, created a double burden.

Savage’s decision to speak candidly comes at a time when conversations around consent, privacy, and the treatment of women in the public eye are louder than ever. Her story adds to that dialogue — not just as a celebrity anecdote, but as an example of how intimate betrayal can be weaponized and then misunderstood.

By naming what happened and rejecting the idea that it was staged, Savage is reclaiming the narrative on her own terms. The humour that once shielded her has given way to clarity.

The children of the internet may forget a viral clip. But for the person in it, the impact lasts. For Savage, the healing has meant setting boundaries, speaking truth, and refusing to let others define what happened to her.

As she continues promoting This One Is Personal, she says the title reflects more than music. It reflects a decision to own her story — the highs, the hits, and the moments she never chose to share.
