Nigerians have expressed mixed reactions on social media following calls to boycott South African singer Tyla’s upcoming concert in Lagos over renewed concerns about alleged xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa.
The debate began after Tyla announced the dates for her APOP World Tour, which includes a performance in Lagos on December 22, before concluding in Cape Town on January 4 and Johannesburg on January 9.
While many fans welcomed the announcement, others argued that the concert should not take place while reports of attacks against Nigerians in South Africa continue to spark outrage.Several social media users called on Nigerians to boycott the show, insisting that attending the concert would send the wrong message amid ongoing tensions. Some also criticised Tyla for not publicly speaking out against the alleged attacks on Nigerians.
Others pointed to recent reports surrounding the death of Nigerian national Chika Ibe in Cape Town, saying it has further fueled anger and calls for solidarity with victims of xenophobia.However, many Nigerians opposed the boycott campaign, arguing that musicians should not be held responsible for political or social issues in their countries.Some users said supporting Tyla’s music does not amount to supporting xenophobia, while others maintained that entertainment should remain separate from diplomatic and political disputes.
Another group questioned why the backlash was directed at the singer instead of concert organisers or government authorities, saying individuals should be free to decide whether or not to attend the event.The online debate continues as Nigerians remain divided over whether Tyla’s Lagos concert should go ahead, with many balancing their love for music against concerns over the treatment of Nigerians in South Africa.
