Six years after the surprise hit Okay! Madam, director Lee Cheol-ha is back with a bigger, wetter, and funnier sequel. Okay! Madam: Bon Voyage moves the action from a hijacked airplane to a luxury cruise ship, and puts former secret agent Mi-young, played by Uhm Jung-hwa, right back in the middle of the chaos
The 2020 original followed an ordinary family whose flight to Hawaii was taken over by terrorists — except for mom Mi-young, who turned out to be a retired elite agent. That mix of slapstick family comedy and surprisingly solid action made Okay! Madam a word-of-mouth success, even as COVID-19 cut its theatrical run short.
For the sequel, Lee wanted to go bigger. This time, Mi-young, her well-meaning husband Seok-hwan (Park Sung-woong), and their kids are trying to enjoy a peaceful ocean vacation. That plan falls apart fast when a ruthless criminal syndicate hijacks their cruise ship in the middle of the sea.
What follows is two hours of tight corridors, dining hall brawls, pool-deck chases, and underwater fight scenes. The confined setting of a ship gives the sequel a different energy from the first film. There’s nowhere to run, so the action gets more creative — and more physical.
“Expanding on the original setup, the sequel mixes fun physical humor with even more exciting action scenes,” Lee said at the premiere on Monday. “I had planned a three-part series from the very beginning, and it took six full years to present this second installment.
The heart of the film is still Uhm Jung-hwa as Mi-young. After six years, she slips back into the role of the mom who can cook dinner and disarm three hijackers before dessert.
Uhm performs much of her own action this time, including sharp martial arts sequences and underwater stunts that push beyond the slapstick of the first movie.Even though it was an action scene between two female characters, we trained hard to make it just as powerful and thrilling as any other action scene,” Uhm said. “I also gave my absolute best in every single frame.
“When we released the first film in 2020, it was cruising smoothly in its first week before the theater industry was hit hard by COVID-19, which was deeply heartbreaking,” she said. “Back then, we talked about making it a series, and I am so thrilled and eager to return as Mi-young six years later.
Joining the cast is Choi Soo-young of Girls’ Generation, making her first turn as a villain. She plays Anya, the leader of the criminal group that takes over the ship.anya isn’t just a threat — she’s also a fan. Her character has a fanatical admiration for Mi-young, which creates an interesting dynamic between the two women on screen.
“Uhm was my real-life role model, so playing a character who holds a fanatical admiration for her on screen felt like an interesting crossover,” Choi said. She also spoke about watching Uhm work on the cramped ship sets. “It was truly moving to see Uhm, a fellow singer-actor, pour all her energy into every shot with a bright smile. I learned so much about the attitude I should have when I reach her level of experience.”
Park Sung-woong returns as Seok-hwan, Mi-young’s affectionate and slightly clueless husband. His job in the sequel is to provide both comic relief and genuine heart as he tries to protect the family while getting out of Mi-young’s way.
“We filmed without any awkwardness between us,” Park said. “We created this sequel to break the common prejudice that sequels are less entertaining than the original, and I think the story has become much richer.”
Lee Sang-yoon is also back as Cheol-seung, Mi-young’s former fellow agent. He called it “a privilege to participate in a series sequel during a challenging time for the film industry” and said he hopes the film does well enough to lead to a third part.
What made Okay! Madam work was the balance. It never took itself too seriously, but the action was real enough to make you believe Uhm could actually take down a plane full of bad guys. Bon Voyage keeps that tone.
The humor still comes from the family dynamic — a husband who doesn’t know his wife’s past, kids who are embarrassed by their parents, and Mi-young trying to keep everyone calm while secretly running a rescue operation. But the action is scaled up. The ship setting allows for more set pieces: a fight in a galley, a chase through a water park area, and the underwater sequences Uhm mentioned in interviews.
Director Lee said the goal was to deliver “grander scale” without losing the warmth. The film is still about a family, just one that happens to be fighting terrorists on vacation.lee has been open about wanting Okay! Madam to be a trilogy. The six-year gap between films was partly due to the pandemic and partly due to planning.
“I am deeply grateful and moved that our actors joined us again to enrich this film,” Lee said. “And I sincerely hope it performs well so we can realize our dream of making the third installment.”
That ambition makes sense. Korean action-comedies have found a strong audience both domestically and abroad, and a female-led franchise centered on Uhm Jung-hwa is still relatively rare.
For Uhm, returning to Mi-young feels like unfinished business. For Choi, it’s a chance to play against type. For Park and Lee Sang-yoon, it’s a return to characters they clearly enjoy.
Bon Voyage will hit theaters in Korea on August 12. With its mix of family comedy, large-scale action, and Uhm Jung-hwa leading the charge, the sequel is aiming to do what the first film did — but on water, and with higher stakes.
