American singer, songwriter and actress Mary J. Blige has opened up about her decision not to have children, her changing feelings about motherhood, loneliness and the painful experiences that shaped her.

The Grammy-winning star spoke candidly about her personal journey during a recent appearance on the IMO Podcast, where she discussed music, healing and learning to embrace who she has become.Blige explained that her decision to remain childfree was influenced partly by watching family members and other parents struggle with childcare and lose some of the freedom they once had.

She said seeing people around her constantly needing babysitters and having fewer choices made her feel that motherhood was not something she wanted at the time. However, Blige admitted that her perspective has changed as she has grown older. She said watching parents build close relationships with their teenage children has made her look at motherhood differently.

According to the singer, she now has mixed feelings about the decision she made when she was younger.Blige also reflected on her experiences with abuse and the process of healing from painful moments in her past. She acknowledged that while she has forgiven and moved forward, some experiences can still hurt.

Despite the pain, she said those experiences ultimately taught her important lessons and made her stronger. When asked whether she ever feels lonely because she does not have children, Blige admitted that loneliness sometimes creeps in. However, she said she has learned to enjoy her own company and find happiness in simple things. She revealed that she enjoys listening to music, laughing by herself and even trying on clothes when she is alone at home.

For Blige, being alone does not necessarily mean being unhappy. Instead, she has found ways to make her own company enjoyable while continuing to focus on healing and personal growth. The singer was previously married to music manager and producer Martin Isaacs.

They tied the knot in 2003 before their divorce was finalised in 2018.The former couple did not have children together, although Blige became a stepmother to Isaacs’ three children from previous relationships.Blige has previously spoken about embracing her role as a stepmother and, in 2022, discussed her decision to prioritise freedom rather than motherhood. Her latest comments show that while her views on having children have evolved over time, she remains comfortable with the life she has chosen and the lessons she has learned along the way.
