Media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has shared her thoughts on the ongoing debate about relationships, arguing that many Nigerian men depend too heavily on money instead of building genuine emotional connections.
Speaking during a recent episode of a podcast hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Makinwa rejected the belief that modern Nigerian women are naturally materialistic or only interested in financial gain. According to her, relationships have always involved some form of exchange throughout history. She suggested that the growing focus on money in today’s dating scene is partly driven by men who often use their financial status as their main way of attracting women.
According to Makinwa, many Nigerian men believe offering money is enough to impress a woman, leaving little room for meaningful conversations or emotional connection.
She added that some women only became highly demanding because they were conditioned to expect money after repeatedly encountering men who used wealth as their primary way of expressing interest.
Her comments have sparked fresh conversations online about dating expectations, gender roles, and the place of financial stability in modern relationships.
