EA Sports’ upcoming EA FC 27 will launch with a 16+ age rating, marking a significant change from previous editions of the football game series, which were typically rated suitable for younger audiences. The higher age rating follows updated classification guidelines that now consider online features such as paid random rewards, commonly known as loot boxes.
One of the game’s most popular modes, Ultimate Team, allows players to purchase virtual card packs containing random footballers to build their squads. While players can earn cards through gameplay without spending real money, buying packs offers a faster route to building stronger teams. The revised rating reflects growing concerns about loot box mechanics, which some critics believe share similarities with gambling because they involve spending money for randomized rewards.
However, EA maintains that spending money in Ultimate Team is optional and that players can fully enjoy the mode without making purchases. The new rating is expected to have the biggest impact on physical sales, where retailers may restrict purchases by younger customers.
For digital purchases, online stores and gaming platforms already provide parental controls, while EA also limits in-game purchases on accounts belonging to younger players.Beyond the age rating, EA FC 27 introduces several new features.
Players will be able to explore The Grounds, a new open-world training area where they can improve their skills and receive guidance from football stars such as Kylian Mbappé and Chloe Kelly. Fan-favorite character Alex Hunter also returns to offer advice throughout the experience.EA has also promised gameplay improvements, including better attacking movement and smarter AI opponents. More gameplay details are expected to be revealed ahead of the game’s launch, which is anticipated around September.Another talking point is the introduction of the Ultimate Plus Edition, priced at £139.99, which includes exclusive bonuses and allows players to access the game one week before its official release.
